The Free Ride World Championship's 2006 - last test

Luís Fragoso, IFWA, International Free Ride Watercraft Association's, vice president, tells like was the 8th Jet Waves, Free Ride World Championship, happened in November 24th 25th and 26th, in Vila Beach, Imbituba/SC.

Since it was create, the World Championship, never a final was so hard and disputed like this year, because in Jet class there were 4 riders with title's change like in Runabout class, there were 3 rider fighting for title. In true, the Italian Frederico Bufachi arrived in leadership the championship with just 4 points, follow for Pierre Maixent and Gil Bernier, that has 25 points for dispute, only the triumph interests, even for championship's leader, because if Pierre Maixent had been win, the second placement didn't enough, due to difference between the points of first and second placement is 5 points.

So, with a sea without big waves, the riders went to this last test with an additional of nervous that interfere some Brazilian riders like Ivo Sehn, the Vice Champion in title and Douglas Carvalho that ever shine for your technical.

In the sea where, 15 days before, received the world round of Surf World Championship (WTC) the rider did his tricks with waves until one meter and one meter in a half, that happened in three batteries, Bufachi kept the leadership follow for Pierre Maxent, good inspired Romain Stampers and Ivo Sehn. Eminence that Gil Bernier tried everything to arrive in semifinal, but problems in your jet didn't allow this great rider show all his potential.

The raffle showed that semifinals were between Bufachi and Ivo and between Pierre and Romain. If the emotion ever was present during his round, the same was in semifinals, the rain didn't damage the test. So, Bufachi and Ivo gave an authentic show of surf's tricks and jumps, Ivo was better on surf and the Italian better on jumps with a lot of Back Flips and Barrel Roll that were decisive for your passage to the big final.

In the other semifinal Romain Stampers did a hard work with Pierre Maixent and fight strongly for your passage for the final, with a peculiar rhythm and happiness. But the most incredible is that Romain disjoint o shoulder during the semifinal and back to sand to put it in his right place, and go back to the sea with pains, but a lot of determination. Everybody had been seen the test and the rider were applauded for your partners and public. In fact Romain Stampers is a big example Free Ride's spirit.

Still with small waves, started the final, where Bufachi and Pierre gave one of bigger Free Ride's show, so many, the Italian that the weak point ever was the surf, it's better than French in this area. But Pierre started as soon as possible with two Back Flips almost consecutive and an incredible rhythm, so in final's 10 last minutes every saw a big balance with a lot of Barrel Roll simple with one hand and Back Flip, etc. All FreeRide trick's catalog did with a fantastic level and very balance. Here, just miss Bufachi do your Barrel Roll no hands to do the difference.

The final had been finished and the doubt continuous between riders and public, about who would be the winner, because the intensity of tricks, people made bet, but anyone can be the winner. After a delay meeting the judge gave the victory for Pierre Maixent that so, got the World Championship for one point, renovating your world title in Jet.

In Runabout the James Visser absent in this test retired something about competitively, because the dispute was between Jimmy Visser and Pierre Maixent. Yes, Pierre again, that's incredible, he's one of few riders that dispute in two classes and ever is a winner in potential, what confirm his great quality and preparation of this Freerider.

Beyond this two ride that dispute the final ad the South African Andrew Smith, who shows an impressive quality technical in jumps, but principally in his surf with a lot of tricks of an incredible technical and beauty. But he's away of the semifinals. Like it's a habit, Jimmy Visser didn't joke in his work and passed three batteries with a big authority and do all tricks that make him a big winner.

Despite of compete in two classes, Pierre Maixent got his passage to semifinals, dispute with two jet became more difficult, but the French had been got face this. Being two defined riders to fight for the title, emotion was between Leandro Vieira and Du Nunes that dispute the semifinals and the title of Brazilian in a better placement that was to nice Du Nunes, which was very happy. The other rider, Leandro, tried hardly, but a jet's problem didn't allow more of this. Here, is important point out that during the batteries, Leandro's jet had a problem and was Du Nunes, who lend your jet to Du. It's FreeRide's spirit and attitude.

In the final, beyond all Pierre Maixent's effort, Jimmy Visser didn't give changes and got his 8th title like Kelly Slater, a surf myth, that 15 before and in the same place, got his 8th title, too. It's seen that we have two carrier parallels of two big myths of radical sports.

So finished, in Imbituba Beach, Brazil, the FreeRide World Championship, organized for Tchello Brandão that did an excellent work, where the bad weather and miss of big waves got erase the event's shine and great organization.

Last News After the end of championship, the IFWA has an annual meeting and got important decisions. So the World Championship will have for five round, the first will be in Portugal, in April 14th and 15th 2006, after Spain and France in the weekends later.

Beyond the World Championship, will happen the Europe Championship with five rounds, the three first rounds of World Championship will be valid for Europe competition too, that after a fourth round in Morocco and the last in France.

Finally, the IFWA decided change some competition's rules, now, the eliminatory is rider against rider, like in tennis, this change add more emotion to Free Ride.
