Wisniewska ends comeback season with a gold medal at IPC Nor-Am Slalom
Canadian para-alpine season ends with IPC Nor-Am in Sun Peaks, BC
SUN PEAKS, BC (March 13th, 2008) - Karolina Wisniewska (Vancouver, BC / Calgary, AB) finished her "comeback" season triumphantly today, winning the Ladies standing skier category at the IPC Nor-Am slalom in Sun Peaks, BC. It was the final ski race of the 2007/08 Canadian para-alpine ski racing season.
Wisniewska, one of the most decorated para-alpine ski racers in Canadian history, was a member of national para-alpine ski team from 1995 until 2004.
Inducted in the Canadian Ski Hall of Fame in 2007, Wisniewska earned the unique distinction of becoming the first Canadian alpine skiing athlete in either the Paralympic or Olympic Winter Games to win four medals, winning silver in the slalom and giant slalom as well as bronze in the super G and downhill.
The 31-year-old Wisniewska won today's slalom, finishing in a two-run combined time of one minute 58.85 seconds.
"I had two amazing slalom runs, which makes me super happy. I wish my skiing was that good in the slalom the whole season," said Wisniewska with laugh.
Matthew Hallat (Coquitlam, BC) won the Men's standing skier category with a two-run time of 1:47.28. Hallat was fastest in the first run by almost three seconds and then held on in the second run for the win.
"Slalom is definitely my strongest event. I had a really good run this morning and managed to keep it together this afternoon," said Hallat. "It was a good couple days that I was looking forward to and I'm glad it went so well."
Overall World Cup Crystal Globe winner Kimberly Joines (Edmonton, AB) ended the season with another gold medal in the Ladies sit skier category while Chris Williamson (Markham, ON) and guide Nick Brush (Panorama, BC), also World Cup Crystal Globe winners, won the Men's visually impaired category by a remarkable 11.14 seconds.
Vivian Forest (Edmonton, AB) was the only athlete to finish both runs today in the Ladies visually impaired category, crossing the finish line with a combined time of 2:14.95.
Josh Dueck (Vernon, BC) had the best time in the second run today in the Men's sit skier division, placing second behind Britian's Sean Rose overall.
