Old Town - the historic part of Yellowknife, NT, Canada 2008

Know the interesting features of Old Town, where the capital Yellowknife began. Nei Maldaner was there in march 2008 and took a lot of photos! Check about!

Old Town is so called for a pretty basic reason. It is the original settlement of Yellowknife. Nestled on the North Arm of Great Slave Lake (the ninth largest lake in the world) Old Town grew up alongside the small Dene community of N'dilo.

Old Town residents live in the original neighborhoods known by quaint names such as Willow Flats and Peace River Flats. A walk through these neighborhoods allows a look into some of the history of this city.

While making a way along the dusty street on the Willow Flats side of Old Town It's possible to see the original homes of the prospectors who flocked here in the 1930s looking for gold. There's also Some beautifully designed newer homes fill gaps left when shanties were removed, and command gorgeous views of Yellowknife Bay.

The tiny neighborhood is an intriguing mixture of the old and the new. But a lot of people stay surprised that people actually live in them, and they're very proud of still live there. Brilliantly colored flowers tumble from containers and window boxes, contrasting vividly with starkly unpainted wooden walls.

Outside one shanty, things like rusted bedspring, old boots, a rotting canoe initially gives the appearance of a slum. Although, after analyzing, you see that it's intentionally to maintain its atmosphere.

BULLOCKS BISTRO - Enjoyment in Old Town

Besides being old and rustic, Old Town has a pub restaurant where people have a lot of fun. According to some clients, Bulloks Bistro is one of the most fish places they have ever visited. It isn't going to look like much from the outside but the building is a heritage site and it is suppose to look like that.

When you go in there is a cooler full of beer and you just help yourself to the beer. There isn't a lot of room and you are encouraged to sit with others and meet people. It is a fun place with pictures of past visitors all over the walls. In the menu, there's fish for all kind of taste, even grilled. Nei Maldaner had also been there and enjoyed the place: "It's nice and very cozy, fantastic!".
