Carol Beck was handler in the Grant Beck?s team, and tells how she act in this function, that requires dedication and responsibilities. The competition happened from march 28th to 30th, 2008.
In the year of 2007, Carol Beck participated for the first time of Diavik 150 as a musher. In 2008 she was still there, although as a handler. The competitor gave support to him husband, Grant Beck, who besides been a veteran musher, is also the president of the Diavik 150 committee.
The handler is also an experienced racer, she's musher has twenty six years. According to her, Diavik 150 was an incredible experience and she'll never forget: "I'll never forget the encouragement transmitted by the spectators, It was so motivating".
During the fall, Carol and Grant prepared themselves to the winter competitions. They take care of the health eating a balanced diet year round. She does a lot of walking, hiking and working with the dogs to keep in shape. In this edition of Diavik 150, their team placed in fourth, with a total time of ten hours, six minutes and forty seven seconds.
According to her, her good relationship with the dog, is good to their development. She's very attached to them, "they are my friends". In the competition she was surprised with the dog Molina "a champion leader was born" - she said.
The most difficult was making the right decision on team selection daily. In the team run both male and female, but is necessary to choose right. Generally the females are faster, although, males are stronger.
Her main activities as a handler, in her husband's team is to take care for the dogs before and after the race. Mushers all have various methods of doing this. Overall her responsibilities are: feeding, watering, massaging and making sure they dogs are ready for racing.
She spends a lot of time with the dogs during the race weekend to make sure I am aware of their needs. She also makes sure all of the logistics are looked after for the race and all equipment is ready to go.
With this cares, no one dog got hurt or injured. Her large knowledge contributes to this success. She's very proud of this, and she's right. The handler had already won the prize Best Handler, in Alpiroad, in the European Alps and in other Canadian Championships.
Into the 3-day competitions, didn't have occurred real problems to her team. Except for a dog carried for thirty miles the first day. She was fine, just not as fast as the rest of the group. In the res, went everything well, mainly with the equipment, that kept up with the track.
Carol's Beck volunteer profession as a handler, contribute to her live a health lifestyle with her husband. In addition, her job is so noble, because the handle of the animals before and after the race, is very important to the team's performance.
