Nei no Labrador Explorer 2008 - Morning and polar bear - Day 19

The Expedition of Labrador happened in July of 2008, in the located area among Canada, Arctic and Groelândia. See the oficial report of July 19, sent by Nei Maldaner that participated in that great adventure.

I didn’t fall asleep and the night was not coming, so after the dinner I went to my bedroom, to transfer the photos and the videos. After that I decided to take some photos of the ‘day that was night’. We were in the north side, so the sun went down but the day didn’t get dark.

The sky was full of clouds, but was pretty, the clouds were blue because of the light of the sun reflected on the water.  Things that you see only if you don’t sleep. The moon was leaving with its golden bright, I was enjoying the sun and its bright, and the time was passing.

I went to the top of the ship, to take some photos with the ship and to film the sun going down, with another camcorder I made a zoom. The clouds were covering the moon, so I saw the moon going away and I was playing with the colored clouds above the sun. At the Labrador, the sun takes more than hour to come up, so I could learn how to photograph.

I saw a big iceberg in front of us. The birds started to appear, but swimming. That was funny, and the guide told me that those birds could dive until 60 meters. The images now were changing, because the clouds were yellow, it was like a painting and the horizon line was gray, because of the hot air and the cold water.

My heart started to beat faster, I thought that I saw a whale but for real it was an iceberg. I was waiting until the sun come up, but the clouds were obstructing my vision, the clouds were looking like fire. As soon as the sun came up, I turned the camera on.

The sun was already white, creating a yellow, orange and red landscape, because it was behind the clouds. So I started taking different photos. On the other side, next to us, I saw a small iceberg and some birds.

I was thinking about the light, the importance of the light and the colors. I started to think: “How something for free, so simple, could leave me so happy.” My problem is that I don’t take time to enjoy the sun at Brazil, cause there it’s very quick.

We started to pass by icebergs again, and we saw several birds over its. Well, the sun was high in the sky, but it was already 7:00, everybody would wake up. I decided to take a nap, I only slept for 4 hours, and because Fernando woke me up, telling me that they saw bears.

The bear was sleeping, didn’t even notice that our ship was there. When we were almost stopping, the bear woke up, lengthened itself and felt sleep again. In the end, we were going away and the bear stood up and walked in the opposite direction.

The bear calmly went in the opposite direction and stopped to roll on the snow. After that, he stopped and looked at us, yawning. It was something beautiful to watch those ‘white little point” in the snow.

We couldn’t see it anymore, only who had binoculars or big lens was still looking at the bear. Now we were going back to the ship, to navigate in our big floating house trough more ice before the lunch.
