Aconteceu de 13 à 15 de abril de 2007, em Peniche, Portugal, a 1ª Etapa do Campeonato Mundial de Free Ride. Confira como foi!

Depois do primeiro dia de treinos livres e oficiais, o Mundial de Freeride que rolou em Peniche, na praia de Supertubos, teve momentos de êxtase com as acrobacias áreas e surf do mais alto nível.

No sábado, voltou a sobressair o senhor da modalidade Sit-down, Jimmy Visser, um sul-africano sete vezes campeão do mundo, que este ano vê seu grande opositor, o francês Pierre Maxient, Vice-Campeão ano passado, cada vez mais parelho. Já na categoria de Stand Up, o Bi-Campeão Mundial Pierre Maxient voltou a brilhar seguido do italiano Frederico Buffachi e de outro francês, Romain Stampers. Classificam-se os 16 melhores da Stand-up para as oitavas de final de domingo, e os 4 primeiros para as semi-finais da Sit-down; importante lembrar que o júri avalia os pilotos pelo nível de dificuldade, beleza da manobra, aproximação à onda, nível de risco e fluidez de atuação.

No último dia da etapa portuguesa, o Freeride viveu seguramente um dos melhores dias da história do esporte radical. Ondas perfeitas de até 2,5 metros, sol alto o dia inteiro, público caloroso e pilotos a exibirem uma qualidade de manobras acima de todas as expectativas, tornaram esta etapa mais uma vez especial como prova de abertura do Mundial de Freeride.

Jimbo Visser mais uma mostrou suas qualidades, depois de passar pelo espanhol A. Arrizabalaga, passou novamente por uma disputa apertada com Pierre Maixent, na final da categoria Sit-down, e obteve difícil vitória; o terceiro lugar do pódio foi ocupado pelo outro espanhol, Cristobal Bejeiro.

A Stand-Up começou o dia tenso, 16 pilotos enfrentavam-se em oito baterias homem-homem, a procura das vagas das quartas-de-final e semi-finais. Franceses enrentaram-se mais de uma vez, os americanos destacavam-se, o brasileiro Ivo Sehn e o italiano F. Bufacchi mostraram a competência de sempre. O brasileiro Alexandre Sampaio, o Xan, e a surpresa portuguesa Carlos Matos não conseguiram avançar mais, o inesperado foi a derrota de Pierre Maixent para seu compatriota Gil Beurnier, repetindo o que ocorrera entre eles na etapa fracesa do ano passado. Nas quartas-de-final o público viu o excelente piloto americano Ross Champion vencer o Vice-Campeão Mundial do ano passado, Federico Bufacchi, e avançar como favorito para as semi-finais, onde enfrentaria Ivo Sehn, que acabara de vencer o americano M. Serlin, "devolvendo" a vitória que este conseguira em cima do Xan. Na outra semi-final G. Beurnier enfrentava outro americano, Z. Waddle.

Ross Champion estava com o jet na mão neste domingo, venceu Ivo com manobras áreas que conquistaram o público e ainda derrotou G. Beurnier com acrobacias que levantaram o público na praia de Supertubos; na disputa pelo terceiro lugar, o brasileiro Ivo Sehn levou a melhor e mostrou que está de volta a boa forma de 2005, quando foi Vice-Campeão.

Segundo Marcelo Brandão, o Tchello, Presidente da Federação Internacional de Freeride Jet Ski (IFWA), a vitória de Ross Champion foi uma surpresa, mas ele mereceu ter ganho; Ross não é um piloto desconhecido do público especializado, já que ficou em quarto na etapa americana do campeonato de 2005.

After the first day of free and oficials trainings, the Free Ride World Championship, that happened in Peniche, at Supertubos beach, had ecstasy moments, with air acrobatics and surf of the higher level.

On Saturday, Jimmy Visser, a south-African 7 times World Champion, that this year sees his opponent, the Frenchman Pierre Maxient, vice-champion last year, returned to sobressair in the Sit-down category. In the Stand Up category, the bi-world champion Pierre Maxient returned to shine, followed by the Italian Frederico Buffachi and another Frenchman, Romain Stampers. The 16 best of Stand Up get the classification to the eighths finals on Sunday, and the fourths to the semi-finals of Sit-down. It's important to remember that the jury evaluate the pilots about the difficult level, beauty of the maneuver, wave approximation, risk level and fluidity of the performance.

In the last day of Portuguese round, the Freeride had one of the best days of radical sport history. Perfect waves of until 2,5 meters, sun all the day, big public and pilots showing an excellent quality of performances, over the expectation. One more time, this things became the first round very special.

One more time, Jimbo Visser showed his qualities, after pass the Spanish A. Arrizabalaga, passed again by a dispute with Pierre Maxient, in the final of Sit-down category, and won; the third place in the podium was occupied by another Spanish, Cristobal Bejeiro.

The Stand-up started a tense day, 16 pilots faced in eight batteries man-man, looking for the vacant of the quart-finals and semi-finals. Frenchmen faced more than one time, the Americans detached, the Brazilian A. Sampaio, Xan, and the Portuguese surprise Carlos Matos didn't advance more, the unexpected was the defeat of Pierre Maxient to Gil Beurnier, repeating what happened between them in the French round last year. In the quart-finals, the public saw the excellent American pilot Ross Champion wins the vice-world champion in the last year, Frederico Bufacchi, and became the favorite to the semi-finals, where he would face I. Sehn, that won the American M. Serlin. In the other semi-final G. Beurnier faced another American, Z. Waddle.

Ross Champion was with the jet in hand this Sunday, won Ivo with air acrobatics that conquered the public and defeated G.
