Nei Visita Kugluktuk no Artico Canadense 2008

Lugares inusitados, para marcar para toda vida, lugares onde temos muito aprender, e q nos tragam tambem um ambiente alegre e cultural. Assim Nei buscou conhecer Kugluktuk, Nunavut, no artico do Canada.

Kugluktuk, Nunavut

Kugluktuk, Nunavut. Canada. (Formerly Coppermine) in the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut, it is located at 67.82 N, 115.15 W. It is the most westerly community of Nunavut with a population of approximately 1362.

Kugluktuk and other communities of Western Nunavut.Kugluktuk (Inuinnaqtun: Qurluktuk, "the place of moving water"

Inuktitut: formerly Coppermine until 1 January 1996) is a hamlet located in the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut, Canada, on Coronation Gulf, southwest of Victoria Island.

It is the westernmost community in Nunavut, almost on the border with the Northwest Territories. As of the 2006 census the population was 1,302 an increase of 7.4% from the 2001 census.

The traditional language of the area was Inuinnaqtun and is written using the Latin alphabet rather than the syllabics of the Inuktitut writing system. Like Cambridge Bay, Bathurst Inlet and Umingmaktok syllabics are rarely seen and used mainly by the Government of Nunavut.

Kugluktuk is located on the shore of the Arctic Ocean. The surrounding landscape is dominated by the rocky and often barren Canadian Shield. The region has a semi-arid Arctic climate, with very cold winters, summers that are too cool to permit the growth of trees, and light snowfall.

The community has the usual services, a post office, Northern Store, co-op store, and Hunters & Trappers Association. The entire town is covered by wireless Internet service. There are two schools, the Kugluktuk High School and the Jimmy Hikok Ilihakvik.

Kugluktuk, is situated along the banks of the Coppermine River and on the shores of the Coronation Gulf. It's situated west of the mouth of the COPPERMINE RIVER on the mainland Arctic coast.

The hamlet changed its name in 1996 to Kugluktuk, which means "place of rapids," referring to the rapids at BLOODY FALLS, 15 km upstream. Located north, and slightly east of Yellowknife, Kugluktuk is the most westerly community in Nunavut.

In summer, canoeists and rafters take the popular route up the Coppermine River to the scenic "Bloody Falls Territorial Historic Park". Other stimulating outdoor activities include hiking, fishing, hunting, kayaking and photography.

Because the tundra is close to the tree line, a variety of wildlife can be viewed in the area, including grizzly bears, wolverines and moose, as well as tundra wildlife, such as muskoxen, caribou, foxes and wolves.

The people of Kugluktuk rely heavily on their traditional economy of hunting and fishing to feed and clothe their families for cultural and nutritional wellbeing.

Community residents are also optimistic that the growth sectors of tourism, government and especially mining, will increase Kugluktuk's economic development, alongside the established traditional pursuits.

For more information about Kugluktuk, visit the Nunavut Handbook website at: http://www.arctictravel.com. Getting There: First Air operates daily flights to Kugluktuk from Yellowknife.

Kenn Borek Air flies from Cambridge Bay to Kugluktuk on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Please check with the airlines for schedule changes.

History
Samuel HEARNE reached the mouth of the river in 1771. He later witnessed a massacre of COPPER INUIT by his CHIPEWYAN guides at Bloody Falls which he named in remembrance of the slaughter.

The way of life for the Inuit living around this semipermanent fishing and sealing camp changed in 1916, when a trading post was established at the site. As more services became available, the Inuit began to settle permanently.

Present Day
Since the late 1970s, oil and natural gas exploration in the BEAUFORT SEA has provided some economic diversity to this community, where the residents still fish, hunt, trap, seal and do craftwork.

Kugluktuk is further diversifying its economy into tourism by promoting its traditional lifestyle and the historical and archaeological sites near it.
